Last year, Wipro hired about 7,000 people and expects to hire at least that number this year too. Says Lakshman Badiga, chief executive, talent, transformation and staffing, Wipro, “We will parallely hire experienced people. Campus recruits require more training, while experienced folks don’t need that time so we go in for just-in-time hiring for senior people.” But that’s not always possible, and hence the term “bench” has taken on a positive hue at most software services companies in India.
 
Wipro chairman, Mr Azim Premji, met the chief minister Mr YS Rajashekar Reddy in Bangalore after the latter addressed top CEOs in Karnataka. There, Mr Premji said, Wipro has drafted “vast expansion plans in AP�. Wipro’s Hyderabad operations are at present on more than 30 acres involving 2,000 employees.
The Hyderabad expansion plans are at an investment of Rs 750 crore, while Visakhapatnam would involve Rs 200 crore. Mr Reddy invited Mr Premji to come over and identify suitable land in the two cities. Wipro is AP’s second largest exporter registering a turnover of Rs 970 crore in 2004-05.
